Getting Counseling Causes Anxiety

Getting Counseling Causes Anxiety!

It seems like an oxymoron to say that, but isn’t it true? Imagine this: you are someone who struggles with anxiety and needs to find help in dealing with it, but each time you decide to take that step, the anxiety becomes overwhelming, and you can’t seem to make that phone call. It seems reasonable to make that statement now, right? Sure, but what if I told you that reaching out can, in fact, help you with your anxiety? And no, I’m not talking about some kind of “self-help” thing, or even a person who “just listens to my problems but doesn’t help,” either. I am talking about finding someone who can help you understand your anxiety and how to manage it. Of course, it would be easier to make anxiety simply disappear, right? But there is something that most people aren’t aware of. Anxiety is natural. Yes, you heard me right, anxiety is a natural response for you. Anxiety comes in different forms and has different causes. The trouble that you may be facing is that your anxiety doesn’t know when to “turn off”. Have you ever heard of the ‘fight or flight’ response? That is the natural response that can appear as anxiety. Something our bodies naturally do to help us respond to danger or threat, that, somewhere in our lifetime, becomes a persistent feeling even when we know we are no longer in danger. That is the cycle that most people find themselves in. A persistent feeling of anxiety that doesn’t seem to go away and makes even the good times feel so much worse than they should be.

Now this isn’t the case for everyone. Each of us experiences some level of anxiety and some are able to manage it without help, and then there are some who experience anxiety so debilitating that they can’t leave their home anymore. While giving you a magic “cure all” pill or doing this “sacred exercise,” and suddenly your anxiety will be no more, would be a wonderful thing, to my knowledge, there is nothing like that that exists. However, what I can do is help teach you about anxiety, why it happens, where it comes from, and how to manage it in your daily functioning. At first, it won’t be easy, but with time, anxiety can become manageable without the “magic cure-alls”. I believe that education is one of the greatest tools in helping people with anxiety. If you or someone you know struggles with anxiety, know that help is out there; you just have to make that first call.
